Sample MLA Research Paper with explanation boxes!

APril 12

Have a relaxing spring break!
Here is a Research Resources Handout. It is not comprehensive, but I thought I'd share some potentially useful links. Just a reminder that your research topic proposal is due when you return from break (Description of the crime/event, preliminary research questions, an explanation of why this event interests you, TYPED, one page max)

APRIL 4

Please read and print ESSAY #2, and for later reference, RESEARCH PROJECT INFORMATION.
For Thursday, April 6, please read ONCE MORE TO THE LAKE and be prepared to discuss.
Thank you

Week of 3/9

As you prepare to write your first essay, make sure that you are taking notes on each chapter of the book.  As you summarize, remember that you do not need to recount every detail, but instead, focus on the big moments in the chapter that seem to propel to narrative and lead to change or awareness for the narrator. The next step is to ask yourself about the significance of these events. Where do we see the most tension? Where is the narrator second-guessing her choices? Where does the narrator doubt the authenticity of her memory? What is the narrator NOT telling us about? These are all important aspects of memoir writing.

Please print ESSAY #1. After you choose a topic, you can begin to look for specific scenes, details, and passages that will support your analysis.
